What is AI SEO? A plain-English guide for founders
AI SEO is one of those terms that gets used to mean several different things, often in the same sentence. If you run a business and someone has told you that you need it, this guide explains what it actually covers, what changes versus the SEO you already know, and what is worth doing first.
The short version: AI SEO means using AI to run search work faster, and optimising your site so AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews can find, understand, and quote you.
The two halves of AI SEO
Half one is AI as a tool. Keyword research, content briefs, on-page optimisation, internal linking suggestions, and technical audits can all be accelerated with AI workflows. The work itself is familiar SEO - AI just lets a small team produce at the pace of a much larger one.
Half two is AI as a destination. People increasingly ask an assistant a question instead of scanning a page of blue links. When that happens, the assistant summarises an answer and names a handful of sources. AI SEO in this sense is the work of becoming one of those named sources. It is sometimes called answer engine optimisation, generative engine optimisation, or GEO - the labels differ, the goal does not.
How AI SEO differs from traditional SEO
Traditional SEO optimises for position in a ranked list. AI SEO also optimises for being the source an assistant trusts enough to quote. That shifts the emphasis in a few concrete ways.
- •Direct answers matter more than keyword density. If your page answers a question in a clear, self-contained paragraph, an assistant can lift it. If the answer is spread across five sections of preamble, it usually will not.
- •Entities matter more than phrases. Assistants build a model of who you are, what you do, and where you operate. Consistent naming across your site, your structured data, and third-party profiles makes that model accurate.
- •Structured data does heavier lifting. Schema markup tells a machine what a page is about without it having to infer. Organization, Service, Person, and FAQPage markup are the practical starting set.
- •Being crawlable is non-negotiable. Many AI crawlers read raw HTML and do not run JavaScript. A page whose content only appears after a script runs can be effectively invisible to them.
- •Citations and consistency replace some of the role of raw backlink volume. Being described the same way in multiple credible places helps an assistant feel safe repeating it.
What does not change
The fundamentals still decide the outcome. Fast, crawlable pages. Content written for a real reader with a real question. A site structure that makes topics easy to follow. Genuine expertise that shows in the detail. AI engines are trained on the open web, so the things that make a page useful to a person are still the things that make it quotable to a model.
Anyone selling AI SEO as a shortcut around good content is selling something else.
Where to start if you are doing this yourself
- •Make sure your key content is in the served HTML, not only rendered client-side.
- •Add Organization and Service structured data, and Person markup for the people behind the business.
- •Publish a sitemap.xml and reference it in robots.txt.
- •Set canonical tags so duplicate URLs do not split your signals.
- •Write one clear, direct answer near the top of each page, then support it with depth below.
- •Pick the questions your buyers actually ask and give each one a page or a properly structured section.
How long it takes
Technical fixes and structured data can change how you appear within weeks. Ranking and citation gains from content usually build over three to six months of consistent publishing, and depend heavily on how established your domain already is. A new site should expect to spend the first stretch building topical depth before movement shows up in reporting.
